A fresh take on traditional showreels where the brand is the artist, and the messaging is qualifications sourced from application data.

Goal

A showreel is the work sample of choice for creatives when attracting clients or job prospects. However, in a sea of applicants, even that can feel redundant, especially when paired with a traditional application. I knew there had to be a better approach to stand out while demonstrating that I meet the requirements for the position.

 

That was my challenge. How do I market my artistic potential while giving insight into my animation process and strategy? The answer was simple. I become the brand and turn the application data into in-video messaging. After all, that’s what artists/editors do: translate information into digestible visuals.

So after analyzing hundreds of applications across the web, I condensed the most prominent qualifications and language into key messaging points. I then used that data to create an animated pitch/promo reel for my services. To add an extra challenge, I incorporated the messaging into the designs so the animation could be understood without voiceover or captions.  I also adhered to a limited palette and typeface to simulate brand guidelines. This is the final result.

Conceptual Development

Below is some of the industry language I extracted from recruitment applications to create the design boards. I consolidated the list into key points. Then, I used animation and design to demonstrate those skill sets.

Design/Technical skills:

  • Quickly and expertly create compelling motion graphics from provided static designs or footage

  • Create enticing motion graphics for video/animated deliverables (trailers, titles, logos, transitions, and templates) for various content genres including Entertainment, B2B, and Corporate.

  • Design and create storyboard concepts to design enticing motion graphics videos for various file formats and media platforms/social channels such as TV, IG, IG Stories, Facebook, Twitter, TikTok, and LinkedIn

  • Create and optimize animations to live on the web and mobile

  • Demonstrate a strong design POV with an eye for color theory, composition, and typography

  • Appropriate use of brand colors, images, and fonts, allowing for effective legibility and functionality

  • Using design and motion purposefully to drive engagement and action

 

Marketing/Soft skills: 

  • Understand principles of effective video creation for digital advertising campaigns, programmatic and video ads for clients across the country

  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams and stakeholders actively engaging in kickoff meetings and understanding project scope and objectives

  • Demonstrate proficiency in maintaining project organization and implementing quality control measures while executing compelling creative work from concept to final deliverables
